Volunteer Information

The USC Family Caregiver Support Center is looking for dedicated, informed, and creative volunteers to help our program maintain a standard of excellence in providing services to family caregivers to older adults.  Volunteers for this program will be trained by staff to assist with the following program activities. Volunteer hours can range between 8-10 hours a month and schedules are flexible depending on the assignment.  Assignments are throughout LA County.

  1.  Advocacy through outreach:  Volunteers will do outreach to senior centers, churches, hospitals, neighborhood councils, etc. to provide information about the FCSC.  A volunteer will also staff health fairs in Los Angeles county in order to inform people about the program services.  The outreach also includes identifying and talking people who are caregivers about the services they can use both in person and by phone or web.
  2. Advocacy through public education: Volunteers who are willing to “tell their story” will go to public hearings and elected official offices in their district and discuss the needs of caregivers.  Hearings are about 2-3 times a year and office visits are also 2-3 times a year.  These volunteers are also those who are willing to tell their story to media outlets.
  3. Public information:  Volunteers will help answer the caregiver support line, assist with mailings, and maintain the resource library for the FCSC program. This requires good phone skills and attention to details and use of the computer. Volunteers will also reach out to caregivers by phone, facebook, and e-mail to inform them about upcoming programs to encourage participation.
  4.  Program support through fundraising/friendraising:  Volunteers will be able to help support the program by raising funds or helping to secure sponsors for the following specific on-going programs:
  • Emergency Respite Fund
  • Telephone Support Programs
  • Caregiver Conference
  • Caregiver Retreats
  • Caregiver Education classes
  • Support Group treats and parking

Volunteers will be part of the Andrus Center Volunteers assigned to FCSC will receive free parking while on campus.  Volunteers can also participate in on going research programs at the center and help with supporting undergrad and graduate students of Gerontology.
